Getting clear about what you desire is almost always one of the first steps in the creative process. Your clarity about your desire sets in motion the conscious and unconscious forces to make your dreams a reality. Clarity drives your attention, your intention, your energy and your time. When you know what you want, then you can truly commit to making it happen.
Clients ask me all the time, “How do I figure out what I want?” Here is a simple, three-step process to identify what you want and why you want it so you can commit to making it happen.
It may seem simple, but often we lose touch with what we truly want because we don’t spend the time to focus on it. We are merely trying to “get by”, “pay the bills”, “survive”, or “get through the day.” To move yourself out of the default mode, you need to deliberately focus on and explore what you want.
Start with a five-minute brainstorming exercise. Keep it simple and focus on the one or two of the following areas of your life (choose the category that feels most compelling to you right now):
Check out the FREE RESOURCES on my website, if you want to explore this brainstorm exercise further.
The point of brainstorming is to let your imagination take over and be creative. Keep your focus on getting all your ideas out on the page. Don’t worry about how it will happen. You can create an action plan later on. Just write down the main points, for example, “Dream house, on beach, in Hawaii.” Or “Profit $10,000 monthly from business.” Or, “Run marathon this year.” Or, “Complete Yoga Teacher Training.” You can fill in the details later on.
Here are some questions to ask yourself as you brainstorm:
If you need more inspiration, try flipping the question and instead of thinking about what you want…think about what you don’t have that you desire to have in your life. For example:
Now, that you have all of your ideas out on the paper. The next question to answer is – by when will you accomplish this goal? Don’t skip this step! Go back and mark each desire with a timeline. For example, if you want to achieve the goal in the next year, write a one by the desire. If you want to achieve it in five years, write a five next to the goal. Some goals may be twenty-year goals.
Next, look at all the goals from each category. From the list of goals you indicated you wanted to accomplish in the next year, choose the single most important goal to you. Circle it on your paper so it stands out.
If you need help deciding, think about which goal will get you motivated and super excited. If you accomplished this you would feel like your life is worth it. It would unleash your potential and challenge you to be your best.
Take five minutes to write a paragraph about why you are absolutely, without a doubt, one hundred percent committed to achieving this goal and desire. Don’t edit your work. Allow your ideas to flow onto the paper. Ask yourself:
You want to make sure this is a truly compelling goal! If in writing about this goal you are not feeling compelled, you may need to come up with a better goal or better reasons to get you motivated. Your why is everything! Your why will keep you going through your fear, doubt, worries and setbacks.
Now, that your paragraph is written, write out or speak out the following affirmation and commitment to your desire:
I, (your name here), use all of my creative power and the power of my focus, drive and attention to create the following desire (write out your desire here). I pledge my full commitment to myself, my potential and my dream. I believe in myself, my dream and my potential. I see myself with my goal accomplished and I feel (insert your feelings here). I am proud of everything I have accomplished.
You are now ready to take on the challenge of discovering and claiming your own true potential as you realize this dream. Keep this commitment somewhere you can easily refer back to it and remind yourself of it daily until your dream is accomplished.
